The Sachem East girls cross country team opened its League II season with an exciting 26-29 win over a powerful Ward Melville squad at home earlier this week.
Alex DeCicco of East won the race in 20:13, a time that puts her #2 All-Time on the Tom Toscano 5K Cross Country Course. Val Romero (3rd), Karli Murphy (6th), Tiffany Ly (7th), and Rachel Ruggiero (9th) completed the scoring for the East Arrows, with Rachel Semetsis, Caitlin O’Hehir, Jaimie Fleming, Shayna Arrigo, and Jill Manfredi all finishing in the top 20 in the race.
The top 11 overall finishers, a combination of East Arrows and Ward Melville Patriots, all ran themselves onto the Tom Toscano 5k Cross Country Course All-Time performers list, in what ranks as one of the fastest HOME dual meets in East history, and certainly the fastest FIRST dual meet in East history.
Cortney Evola bested her previous Tom Toscano 5k time by over 40 seconds, Kaitlin Veigl knocked over one and a half minutes off her previous best on the course, and Carly Napoli improved by three and a half minutes in big step-up performances.
The team travels to Van Cortlandt Park this weekend to compete in the Villa Bears Invitational that features many of the best teams in the New York City region.
