Sachem students were able to experience Camp Invention in late July.

Camp Invention Directors Stephanie Macintosh, Linda Britton and Michele Traina-Delph ran a successful week of learning and fun for all students who participating. The camp focused largely on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The camp was funded in large part by Motorola.

Students worked on the concepts of being creative solving problems, building on prior knowledge and experience, participating in hands-on experiences, and, of course, having fun.

Spending the day in different modules, students had a week filled with problem solving and engagement with things they may not have experienced during the regular school year.

Modules:

  • Pinbug module, took apart electronics by using reverse engineering skills, designed their own insect-themed pinball machine
  • Super Go module, utilized nature to explore energy, fuel, and movement, applied their discoveries to design a motorized vehicle, and morphed their vehicle to adapt to land and water
  • Design Studio module, brainstormed to design a personal invention; use creative thinking exercises that help stretch their minds and imaginations
  • Energized module, high energy games encouraging team-building skills, physical fun requiring cooperation
  • Amplified module, examination of the five senses, built STEM skills while developing bionic gadgets, explored sensory illusions

What they’re saying about Camp Invention …

Jason Newham, Camp Teacher: “Camp Invention gave students of the Sachem community the opportunity to expand their horizons socially, emotionally, and mentally.  Thinking outside the box to problem solve and complete tasks as a team brought together friendships and produced excellent works of creative art!”

Samuel, Camp Intern: “It was amazing! I love these kids. I loved seeing how creative they were and we’ve gotten close.  I’m going to miss them!”

Edelina, Camp ESL student/intern: “Camp Invention was a great program.   It showed me different experiences with friends.”

Gianna, Student: “I loved when we were building the race car and the pinball machine!  I’m just so happy I got invited!”
