Sachem North rising senior Will Russo has committed to play lacrosse at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.
Russo chose the school because of its reputable School of Business and immediate communication and interest in the coaching staff. He was also considering Providence College and the University of Scranton.
UMass-Lowell’s inaugural lacrosse season will take place in the spring of 2015.
“We are very proud of Will,” said Sachem coach Jay Mauro. “He has worked extremely hard. He has gotten better each day and is a pleasure to coach. He’s a great teammate and very coachable. He’s just starting to come into his own and we look forward to watching him continue to improve.”
Russo, a midfielder, will be majoring in business management or accounting with a goal of being a certified public accountant.
As a senior at Sachem he’s hoping to lead the Flaming Arrows to a Suffolk County Championship and beyond. Based on what the program has achieved the last two years, it’s a very attainable goal.
“The Sachem lax program is a hard-nosed, tough program that is fundamentally sound,” said Russo. “I have experienced high competition and hours of hard work and practice on varsity.”
Russo said Sachem’s lacrosse program has provided the ultimate team-bonding experience during his time in black and gold.
“When the kids you go to school with are also your teammates it really brings about a cohesiveness between us,” he said. “Being friends both on and off the field has helped us stay competitive in tournaments when we play against travel teams. This past season was a learning experience for me. The coaches helped me prepare myself for the next level.”
