Sachem wrapped up its Summer ESL program last week at Samoset Middle School. The program welcomed 57 students, 20 of which will be joining Sachem for the first time as kindergartners in the fall.
For instruction, three certified ESL teachers worked alongside three physical educators and interns from Stony Brook University to offer a full day program encouraging speaking, listening, reading and writing for all students in grades K-12. The program was run under the guidance of Stephanie MacIntosh, Sachem’s Administrator for Federal Funds, Research and Development.
This program would not be possible without collaboration between Sachem’s instructional staff, transportation, food service, buildings and grounds, Camp Sachem, Samoset support staff, and security.
MacIntosh had been looking to expand the summer ESL program to offer the opportunity of a language rich immersion experience to more of Sachem’s beginner ESL students throughout the district.
MacIntosh and her staff were able to allocate grant funding to cover three certified ESL teachers to provide language instruction. The students rotated through grade level groups to also participate in organized fitness activities with and leadership activities in order to expand the program to full day.
Sachem was also been able to secure funding for transportation to and from the program, in order to ensure that the students who needed this program the most were able to attend.
“This program is truly a living, breathing example of Synergy,” said MacIntosh, referring to a key element of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which is part of the Covey Leadership program Sachem embodies. “This opportunity has truly been made possible due to the synergistic efforts of many departments in Sachem.”
What they’re saying about ESL …
Secondary level student Nicole: “For all the teachers, thank you to everyone for all that you have taught. Thank you for teaching us new games. You are all so nice. I like this camp. We made new friends from all parts of the world. Thank you for your friendship and help.”
From ESL teachers Beverly Grosshandler, Michele Traina-Delph and Meghan Mastandrea: “It’s been amazing to have witnessed the evolution of the Sachem ESL Summer School since it’s inception of three teaching blocks to a full day program. We are proud to have been a part of the growth and sense of community that formed this summer.”
From the PE Teachers, Jason Newham, Kristen Maccarone, John DiGangi: “The ESL Summer Camp has given students from many nationalities around the world the opportunity to assimilate into the structure, language, style and expectations of a school based format. Our students work towards the 7 Healthy Habits in order to accomplish goals with an emphasis on communication, team building activities, and trust. Over the past few weeks our staff has seen friendships form, communication bridges broken and enjoyment from all who have participated. The response from the students and staff has been incredible and every day the students are eager to accomplish any new challenge that is presented to them.”
