Sachem East senior Drew Alfano recently returned stateside after a nine-day trip to Queensland, Australia to compete in the Down Under International Games.
Competing against student-athletes from across the world, Alfano took home a silver medal in the long jump, a bronze medal in the triple jump and also sprinted in the 100-meter event. The United States won the meet for the third consecutive year, narrowly finishing ahead of New Zealand.
“It was hands down the most fun time of my life,” said Alfano. “Traveling to the other side of the world to compete against foreign athletes was a great experience. I learned so much more about jumping and went on rainforest tours and snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef.”
For the upcoming 2014-2015 school year, Alfano, who also plays football at Sachem East, has his sights set on state and national titles in the long jump. He has aspirations to compete at the Division I level in track and field.
