Alec Sole has waited for it his whole life, and this week he’s going to make his professional baseball debut.
After being selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2014 First Year MLB Player Draft last week, Sole was assigned to the Hudson Valley Renegades, a Short Season Single-A affiliate of the organization.
“I’ve heard it’s very exciting,” Sole said in a media day interview with The Poughkeepsie Journal this week. “There are a lot of fans. It’s a great environment to be in. The field is beautiful and I’m excited to get out there.”
The Renegades play in the New York Penn League – they won the league title in 2012 – and will play a number of times against Brooklyn and Staten Island this season.
The Renegades open the season Friday, June 13 against the Aberdeen Ironbirds, an affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles.
Sole and the Renegades will be back in the area on Tuesday, June 17 to play the Brooklyn Cyclones, an affiliate of the Mets.
He is the first Sachem alum since Billy Alvino (Sachem East Class of 2005) to play in the minor leagues for a Major League club. Alvino was with the Tigers for two seasons.
Sachem Report will have updates about Sole and his minor league progress throughout the summer.
