Lynwood and Merrimac Elementary Schools celebrated their Lighthouse recognition by the Covey Institute with a ceremony at Sachem East on Tuesday evening.
Principal Veronica DeCicco and Principal Danielle DeLorenzo were joined by students, staff and parents to recognize everyone’s efforts in reaching the Lighthouse status of the Covey leadership program. The Sachem elementary schools were the second and third schools, respectively, to reach the honor in New York.
Mrs. DeCicco on the honor: We began this journey more than three years ago with our Superintendent James Nolan. Our teachers and staff members have formed a vision of leadership. We wondered what would be possible of our school was filled with students who are responsible and showed initiative, who were creative and knew how to set goals and meet them, who got along with people with various backgrounds and cultures and who could resolve conflicts and solve problems. These are students and leaders of the 21st century and that’s something Lynwood and Merrimac have journeyed together to achieve.
Dr. DeLorenzo on the honor: Students get the leadership message from everyone throughout the school day. As the children began to understand and use the 7 Habits, they became more motivated, organized, and took ownership of their actions and their learning. This process helps prepare our students to meet the challenges and the opportunities to be successful in the 21st Century. We continue to be motivated by the transformational change we see in our students, staff and parents.
