You can often judge the success of an athlete’s career based on how much the impact of his ability is spoken about after retirement.
Sachem alum Jumbo Elliott was one of the biggest and baddest linemen in NFL history and even though it’s been 13 seasons since he strapped on pads, he’s still spoken about highly in football circles.
This week, NJ.com listed Elliott as one of the top five free agent offensive signings the New York Jets ever made. He was on the list along with Curtis Martin, Kevin Mawae, Vinny Testeverde and Pete Kendall.
Elliott, who graduated from Sachem in 1983, signed with the Jets in 1996 after eight successful seasons with the Giants.
He caught the famed Monday Night Miracle touchdown against Miami and was a point of stability with his veteran presence on some of the best Jets teams in franchise history.
Last week he was named to the ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame.
