The Long Island Track and Field Invitational bills itself as “the Elite Meet.” Sachem North joined the parade of star athletes from Suffolk and Nassau County with race wins, school records and season-best performances.
The North Flaming Arrows day was so successful that each of the 10 athletes competing for Sachem placed in the top six earning coveted award plaques from the prestigious meet.
Sunja Joseph (triple jump), Alyssa Leto (55 meter dash) and Katie Michta (1500 meter racewalk) won events. Sunja broke her own school record in triple jump for the third straight meet with her first-ever 38 foot jump.
Sunja set a new school record in her first attempt in the final round of triple jump. Sunja also broke her own record in the preliminary round with a 37’ 10 ½” jump. Sunja’s old record of 37’ 8” was set at State Qualifier Meet two weeks ago.
Alyssa dipped under the school record of 7.25 set by Melissa Michels last year with a 7.24 in semis of the 55 meter dash. Alyssa’s new record was broken in finals a half hour later as Alyssa won the 55 with a 7.20. Alyssa is the only Suffolk County athlete to run under 7.30 this season.
Katie Michta continued her undefeated season with a wire to wire win in the 1500 meter racewalk.
Season-bests were set by Natalie DeQuarto and Kaitlin Martins in racewalk, Nikki Fogarty in 55 meter hurdles and Leah Blackall in long jump.
Sachem heads to Eastern States at The Armory on Monday for a final tune-up before heading to the NYS Championship Meet at Cornell University next weekend.
