You had to expect Katie Doherty would pack a high scoring average on during her senior season at Sachem East.
She is averaging 21.4 points per game through Monday, February 3, which ranks her No. 4 in Suffolk County and No. 9 on Long Island.
Doherty, who already has one Long Island championship ring this season from her fall journey with Sachem East field hockey, will play hoops at Holy Cross.
East rolls into first place: It wouldn’t be a normal basketball season without Sachem East vying for a regular season title en route to a strong playoff run. On queue, the Arrows beat Brentwood, 52-39, in a crucial late-season game to take the top spot in League I with two games left. Doherty led all scorers with 23 points.
Three’s a charm: In keeping an eye on three-point totals for both Sachem East and Sachem North this season, the highest recorded in a single-game is five by Doherty in a win over Deer Park earlier this year. Lisa Galante hit five in a loss against Whitman also for Sachem North.
Young and restless: Sachem North has more depth on its roster then in years past and its showing in the box scores this season. Freshman Eve Calabria and eighth grader Annie Keenan, among others, have been fresh faces that are making major marks early in their varsity careers. Keenan had ice in her veins when she hit two free throws in the final 30 seconds to preserve a 49-44 win over Hills East on Jan. 28.
Playoff brackets: The Suffolk County Class AA playoff bracket will be available following the end of the regular season around Feb. 8 or 9. The first round out-bracket games will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 11 with other games rolling out on Thursday, Feb. 13.
