Ebonie Lewis won the 55 Meter Dash (7.41), placed 2nd in the Shot Put (32’6.5″), and grabbed 3rd in the Long Jump (16’8″), to lead Sachem East to a 2nd place finish (114 points) behind Champion Sachem North (163 points) at the 2014 Girls League 1 Indoor Track and Field Championships at Suffolk West this past weekend. Longwood and Commack tied for 3rd in this nine team meet.
Sachem East garnered four individual titles in a variety of events. In addition to Lewis winning the 55, Val Romero won the 3000 Meter Run (11:11.37), Katie Hempfling the 1500 (5:05.06), and the 4 by 400 Meter Relay of Alex DeCicco, Ciara Murphy, Nicole Silvestre, and Jayda Allen took home the gold with a 4:19.60 clocking.
The meet got off to a strong start for Sachem East with Romero and Karli Murphy (11:14.02) going 1-2 in the 3000 Meter Run. Lewis won the 55 with Lauren Alberg running a personal best 7.73, just missing making finals. East continued doing well in the running events with Ciara Murphy (1:45.02) and Nikki Silvestre (1:46.05) going 5-6 in the 600 Meter Run and Alex DeCicco running a personal best 3:05.78 to grab 2nd in the 1000.
Behind Hempfling’s win in the 1500 Meter Run an under the weather Shannon O’Hehir fought for a 3rd place finish (5:12.59), with MiKayla Canales running a personal best 5:21.49 to earn a 6th place point. Another highlight of the meet was the 3-4 finish of Rebecca Carroll (9.35) and Kat Sullivan (9.36) in the 55 Meter Hurdles.
In the jumping events, in addition to the 3rd place finish of Lewis in the Long Jump, rookies Kristen Hauschneider and Alex Giambanco both cleared 4’3″ in the High Jump to grab 5th and 6th place. But at this point in the meet, with it’s dominating performance in the jumps, Sachem North began to pull away. The last individual event (Sachem North’s strongest) then stepped on the track- the 1500 Meter Racewalk.
Despite personal best performances by Jaimie Fleming (4th in 7:30.97), Lauren Harris (5th in 7:39.52), and Jen Campbell (6th in 8:00.26) that secured the runner-up spot for East, Sachem North put the meet away by going 1-2-3 in the racewalk. Excellent performances in the last portion of the meet- the Relays- allowed Sachem East to close the Gap on North and more than double the scores of the other 7 teams in League 1.
In addition to the win in the 4 by 400 Relay, the 4 by 200 squad of Lauren Alberg, Kat Sullivan, Rebecca Carroll, and Amanda Fitzgerald took third (1:59.59), and the 4 by 800 quartet of Jill Manfredi, Karli Murphy, Shannon O’Hehir and Katie Hempfling, placed 2nd in a time of 10:15.52. The team will be competing in the County Championship Meet on Saturday, Feb 1st, from 10 am-2pm at Suffolk West in Brentwood.
