Sachem High School East senior Trevor Guerrera signed his National Letter of Intent last week to run at Division I Sacred Heart University. There was a formal signing event held at the high school on Tuesday afternoon.
Guerrera is one of the finest runners to go through the program at Sachem East and has blossomed under head coach John Horst.
“I wasn’t the best at track, but once Coach Horst took over I started to develop and realize I was a good runner,” said Guerrera, who had interest from about 30 colleges. “He brought me into what I am now.”
He’ll be running cross country, winter and spring track, competing in similar events that he has in high school, including the 10k, 400 hurdles, 4×4 relay and 400.
Named League II Runner of the Year this fall, Guerrera holds three school records in the 600, 400 hurdles and 4×4.
“He ranks in the top five of all major cross country record lists at the school,” Horst said. “He’s not a big guy but you can’t measure his heart. He has the heart the size of a giant and that’s what propels him.”
