The Sachem North boys cross country team won the Varsity B race at the Manhattan Invitational held on the historic Van Cortlandt Cross Country course in the Bronx last weekend.
In a meet that features hundreds of teams from over a dozen states and Canada, the harriers from North outpaced 28 other teams from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, California, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts and earned a first place team finish by 12 points over Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School from Massachusetts.
The varsity squad of Anthony Coccia (8th place), Isaac Garcia-Cassani (12th place), Daniel Block (16th place), John Onken (27th place), Jonathan Lauer (48th place), Daniel Stretz (58th place) and Mark Difulvio (64th place) used great racing strategy and an excellent “pack” running style to win their race. The boys had all 7 runners finish before any other team in the field and were the only team to have all 7 runners earning medals by finishing in the top 75 of the race.
Earlier in the day there were some huge breakout performances by many North runners in the freshman and Junior Varsity races. Freshmen Chris Tibbets (4th place) and Jack McGlinchey (8th place) earned medals for their top 10 finishes in the freshman race. Joining them in the top 75 of the race were Tim Urbom (36th), Mike Sinz (55th) and Justin McMahon (71st). In the Junior Varsity races the Arrows were led by Nick Castro (31st), Mike Cavanaugh (40th), Mike Neftleberg (42nd), Joseph Varca (44th), Vinnie Inzone (46th) and Chris Mahoney (57th).
