Last weekend the Sachem North Boys Cross Country traveled to Queensbury New York to run in the Queensbury Invitational and preview the course that will host the state championships in November.
The boys were entered in the Championship varsity race which included some of the best teams in New York State and the United States. The boys placed 9th out of 21 teams. Leading the way for North was senior Anthony Coccia (18th) and junior John Onken (32nd).
Rounding out the scoring 5 runners for North was junior Dan Block, senior Isaac Garcia-Cassani and junior Dan Stretz. Not too far behind were North’s remaining two varsity runners who turned in outstanding races, junior Mark Difulvio and freshman Jon Lauer.
When the race officials merged the four varsity races together and ranked the 90 teams that competed in the meet, Sachem North finished in 8th place, beating out some highly ranked New York State teams.
The JV team led by seniors Mike Neftleberg and Nick Castro also had a strong showing, placing 6th out of 50 teams in their race. The boys continue their season Tuesday with a home meet against New York State #3 ranked Northport and on Saturday at Sunken Meadow State Park for the Suffolk Coaches Invitational.
