Now in its seventh year of operation, Sachem’s Summer Enrichment Camp has become an institution within the school district.
Students in grades Kindergarten through seventh have an opportunity to spend part of their summers in hands-on learning sessions at the Enrichment Camp, which packs a heavy course load of entertaining and enlightening subject matter.
From creating a camp newspaper to building rockets and observing volcanoes eruptions, this is no ordinary summer camp. The camps are held at Gatelot (K-4) and Samoset (5-7).
“The kids have a chance to get their hands dirty with knowledge,” said Camp Director Jason Plantamura, a third grade teacher at Cayuga Elementary School and a Sachem alum from the Class of 1995. “Everything they do is hands on. They’re creating, inventing, and getting their hands dirty every day. The key to this whole program is to get enriched.”
Among the other activities are meteorology lessons, robotics, art appreciation, chef school, and more. Longtime community resident and lifelong educator Sal Nicosia also stopped by this year to talk to the students about civics.
