Sachem was braced for poor weather conditions as it headed out to Glen Head’s North Shore Invitational. Thunderstorms were expected throughout the day – Mother Nature would not disappoint in this regard as a mandatory sheltering was required during the first hour of the meet due to thunder. Occasional light rain dampened the track but there would be no more thunder until the relays were ending.
The last round of thunder hastened the end of the meet and girls pole vault – the final event in progress. Wet conditions also led to Sachem pulling all athletes out of both long and triple jump. Still, the Flaming Arrows looked post-season sharp .
Nikki Fogarty and Emily Rathmann took the top two spots in the 100 m. hurdles today as Nikki overcame a slip at hurdle three to pull away with the win. Emily Rathmann moved up from fourth two second in the second half of her race with a strong finish and excellent form. Melissa Michels (second) and Alyssa Leto (third) joined Sachem’s sprint attack in the 100 m. dash finals. Carly Swinford tied a meet record with her 5’ 2” win at high jump.
Training partner Gabriella Czerw placed third. Distance runners were not deterred by a headwind exceeding 15 mph during the meet. Elise Ramirez led the distance squad with her second place finish in the 1500 m. run in a career-best 4:51.2. Orianna Howell and Amanda Flynn also had career-best times in the 1500. Kristina Schrepf led the half-milers with her 2:27.7 career-best and 2000 m. steeplechasers Ashley Miskovsky and Marissa LoSchiavo also had career-best days.
Alyssa Leto led off Sachem’s 4×100 “A” team in the meet’s penultimate event. Teammates Nikki Fogarty, Emily Rathmann and Melissa Michels brought the baton around the track in a first place and meet record time of 49.5 seconds. Sachem’s “B” team showed Sachem’s sprint depth as Leah Blackall, Ashley Pimentel, Ali Van Sicklin and Kelly Gardner ran a 52.5.
Sachem will attend its final tune-up meet at Copiague High School’s Urban Memorial Meet on Tuesday before competing at Division I Championships on May 20 and 22.
