Last week Chippewa Elementary School students were treated to a “Meet the Author Day” with David Adler, an award-winning writer of the very popular Cam Jansen book series, along with many other titles.

Children had an assembly with Adler to learn about how he became an author and how to write stories.

Third grade children participated in a writer’s workshop with him where he helped them learn about story structure and themes. Fourth and fifth graders had a mystery-writing contest and nine fourth graders and one fifth grader won the opportunity to have lunch with Adler.

“I was very impressed with what great listeners the children are at Chippewa,” said Adler. “They are all so interested in learning about writing. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to sit with so many of the children and listen to their stories.”

The winners read their mysteries to Adler over pizza and cookies and were also given autographed certificates from Adler.

All of the children at Chippewa had the chance to purchase autographed books such as “Cam Jansen and the Graduation Day Mystery” and “Young Cam Jansen and the 100th Day of School.”

“It was a very exciting day for all of the teachers and students at Chippewa,” said Chippewa Principal Patricia Aubrey. “There are so many of us that love to read his stories that meeting him was an honor. And I was very proud of how hard the children worked on their writing to showcase for him.”

“We both love to read the Cam Jansen books,” added Molly Campbell and Sydney Niemann, fourth graders in Mrs. Merz’s class. “Reading our mystery stories to Mr. Adler is something to remember. He was so nice to all of us.”
