In this year’s Sachem Budget Newsletter, you’ll notice that Arrowettes and cheerleading are listed separately from varsity athletics on the list of things that will remain under a passed budget with a 7.49 percent tax increase. They are also listed separately from varsity athletics on the list of things that will be cut if the current adopted budget fails and a 3.14 tax increase is put up under a contingency plan.
Marching band, Arrowettes and cheerleading are all recognized via the teacher’s contract as clubs.
“Arrowettes and cheerleading are not recognized by either New York State or Section XI, the governing body of all high school athletics in Suffolk County, as a sport,” according to Sachem Athletic Director Pete Blieberg. “Both Arrowettes and cheerleading are housed under the Athletic Department here in Sachem and we hold their accomplishments, work ethic and dedication in very high regard. While we value all that they do, it still does not constitute either as a sport.”
