Sachem North’s Envirothon team was named Long Island champion after competing in this year’s LI Envirothon Event at Old Bethpage Village Restoration.
The Long Island Envirothon is part of the North American Envirothon competition, which is sponsored by Canon U.S.A. and is one of North America’s largest environmental education competitions. Participating students learn about their natural surroundings as well as environmental conservation and sustainable development. Both the Nassau and Suffolk County Soil & Water Conservation Districts coordinate the Long Island Envirothon in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
This year’s competition was focused on “Sustainable Rangeland Management.” Over 30 teams rotated between subject stations and answered in-depth questions pertaining to the topic. Funded by the event’s sponsors, the students of the two top-scoring teams, one from Nassau County and one from Suffolk County, each received a $500 scholarship, and paid registration and transportation to compete in the New York State Envirothon held on May 30-31 at Morrisville State College in Morrisville, N.Y.
