Sunja Joseph leaped into the Sachem North record books with her 37’ 10 ¾” on her third attempt in the opening event at Sachem’s Senior Day versus Sachem East meet on Thursday.
Joseph broke the record on her first attempt with a 37’ 7” jump but put a stamp on her new record by nearly four inches as she won triple jump. Sunja broke the 1994 mark set by Nichole Vickers. Sunja just missed a second record as she won long jump with a leap of 18’ 3 ¾”. The school record (set by Crystal Jones in 1985) is 18’ 5”.
Nikki Fogarty took to the starting line less than five minutes after Sunja’s record-setting jump. 15.1 seconds after the starter’s pistol sounded, Nikki tied Denise Raab’s 1999 high hurdles record. Denise’s 1998 200 m. record was matched by Melissa Michels, who was running – and winning – her third race of the meet as she tied the record.
Joseph (TJ and LJ) and Elise Ramirez (1500 and 3000) joined Michels (100, 200, 400) as multiple event winners. Sachem North won 10 of the meet’s 15 open events. North also won the battle of second place by a 9-6 margin.
Sachem continues its busiest week of the season at St. Anthony’s Invitational tomorrow and Saturday before heading out to Bay Shore to close out its dual meet season on Tuesday.
