Sachem East’s recent trip to Columbia and City College, set up through the school’s guidance department, was a rousing success, according to building administration.
“The entire trip was a great learning experience because it let us see college life in the city,” said Breanna Pariti, a junior at Sachem East. “Taking the train added to the whole complete experience and gave it a real city feel.”
Students touring Columbia noted two things about the school that they loved most. First, they found Columbia’s CORE Program to be very interesting. This program ensures that all students, regardless of major, receive a well-rounded liberal arts background. Students also liked that Columbia had a physical campus which brought about a great sense of community. In New York and other cities, an actual campus within in a city is rare and students found this attribute of Columbia to be very appealing.
In the afternoon, students ventured over to City College. This offered a great alternative for students because it is an affordable option and has more middle-of-the-road admissions standards. There were two programs at this school that students also found interesting. The first one is the Sophie Davis 5 year combination BS-MD program. Students in this program can bypass the MCAT exam and enter directly into one of 6 cooperating medical schools. There is also an expedited Physician Assistant program. Students also found City College’s School of Architecture to be an affordable and relatively local option for the BArch degree.
