In a season of firsts for the Marquette men’s lacrosse program and its head coach Joe Amplo, this past weekend proved to be another monumental milestone in university history. The Golden Eagles hosted and won their first home game Saturday night after beating Detroit Mercy, 14-9.
Amplo, a Sachem alum, has led Marquette to a 4-6 overall record in their first year, with three regular season contests left, including a finale at home against Duke on May 5. Duke coach John Danowski was the head coach at Hofstra when Amplo played and coached with the Pride.
A crowd of 1,156 cheered on the Golden Eagles Saturday at Hart Park to take in university history. Dozens of Marquette athletes, including their Elite Eight men’s basketball squad, were on-hand to take in the fastest game on turf.
“It just makes this whole event that much more meaningful when our guys’ peers come out and they cheer for them and they cheer loudly and their into the game,” Amplo told Inside Lacrosse. “That’s what this is about. That’s what college athletics and Marquette is about.”
