Fourth and fifth grade students from Merrimac Elementary School’s Student Council hosted a fundraiser to raise money for Long Island’s Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center in late March.
Save-A-Pet, a non-profit shelter founded in 1994, serves the Long Island community by improving the lives of abused, abandoned and homeless cats and dogs and places them in loving permanent homes.
Merrimac’s Student Council members came up with the idea to create a “Movie Basket” which would be raffled off to the students and staff of Merrimac.
Students and staff members were able to purchase $1 raffle tickets with the hopes of winning the basket which contained a variety of DVD’s, candy and popcorn.
Lisa Martinez, library media specialist and advisor of the Student Council could not have been any happier with the results of the raffle.
“I’m so proud of the students for their creative idea and follow-through in making this fundraiser a success,” said Martinez. “The members of Student Council came up with a terrific idea that appealed to both students and staff members, they came up with an effective way to market their idea and helped to support a very noble cause.”
Overall, the student council was able to raise $184 for the Save-A-Pet Center.
