Sachem East’s Katie Doherty was named First Team All-State in girls basketball for the 2012-2013 season. She is one of five players in Class AA to earn first team honors and just one of two public school athletes.
Joining Doherty on the first team were Saniya Chong, the New York State Gatorade Player of the Year out of Ossining, Aaliyah Jones and Aaliyah Lewis out of Bishop Ford and Sierra Calhoun from Christ The King. Jones was chosen by the New York State Sportswriters as their Class AA Player of the Year.
Of the 60 All-State players in Class AA spread across 11 teams, there are only five from Suffolk County public schools, including Doherty.
It has been a banner year for Doherty, who was also named All-League, All-County and All-Long Island in basketball. She was also a Second Team All-Long Island selection in field hockey last fall after helping the Arrows win their second straight state title.
Doherty joins her cousins Kristen and Meagan in a unique historical note. They all earned All-State honors during their careers. Kristen, who currently plays at Boston College, was a First Team selection in 2010. Meagan was named Second Team last year.
After winning a Class AA Long Island championship this season, Sachem East lost in the state final four.
