Sachem teacher and coach Pete McNeill was notified this week that he was honored with the local Suffolk County Zone Award for “Adaptive Physical Education Teacher of the Year” by the NYSAHPERD.
He is an adaptive physical education teachers who travels amongst several schools each day. He is one of three people who cover all of Sachem’s 18 school buildings.
“Pete McNeill is an extremely compassionate individual who has dedicated his career to the betterment of the students and athletes in the Sachem School District,” said Sachem Athletic Director Pete Blieberg. “He has served our very special population of Adaptive Physical Education students and has brought the program to new heights with his innovative and cutting edge ideas which have allowed our special needs children to fully enjoy their Physical Education experiences. Additionally. Mr. McNeill has been a long time three season track coach and has guided our girls track athletes to outstanding accomplishments over the years. Mr. McNeill recently put in his papers for retirement and he will be someone that will be extremely difficult to replace.”
McNeill, a Sachem alum and track coach at Sachem East, will be presented with the award at the Suffolk Zone Conference in November 2013.
As winner of this local honor, the selection committee will be forwarding his name to the NYSAHPERD for consideration for the State Award.
McNeill is also one of the inaugural inductees of Sachem’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.
