This spring Sachem will pay tribute to its 1993 New York State Championship boys lacrosse team with a 20th anniversary celebration.
Sachem is inviting all players, coaches and anyone affiliated with its 1993 lacrosse team to participate in a special ceremony that will take place during halftime of Sachem’s game against Riverhead on Saturday, April 27. This game begins at 1:00 p.m. and will be held in Fred Fusaro Alumni Stadium at Sachem High School North.
“The 1993 Sachem lacrosse team was considered by many to be the best high school team in the country that year,” said former Sachem lacrosse coach Rick Mercurio. “Of all the teams I’ve had the opportunity to coach, the ’93 team was the best collective team of talent and hardworking players. Every player on that team contributed in some way to the overall success we achieved. They were a very close bunch of kids. They didn’t just play next to each other, they played for each other. I am so looking forward to this 20 year reunion celebration.”
“In celebration of the state championship teams 20 year reunion, we wish to recognize and reunite all former team members and coaches,” Sachem lacrosse coach Jay Mauro said. “At this time, we will proudly honor you individually, the entire group as a team, and your accomplishments.”
Additionally, Sachem will be offering the opportunity for members of the team to order State Championship rings.
“We have specially designed rings with Josten’s that will help reflect the team’s State Championship accomplishment,” Mauro said.
Each ring will cost $160 each and if interested, there is an order form below in PDF form. As you will see on the attached order form, you must get your ring finger sized, fill out the form, make checks payable to JOSTEN’S and mail then back to our Athletic Director Pete Blieberg whose address is on the order form by Feb. 15.
Sachem’s 1993 team beat Fayetteville-Manlius, 9-7, to win the state title, and defeated Ward Melville in the county championship in what will go down as one of the biggest wins in program and school history. It was the second state title in Sachem lacrosse history (1979 was the first) and the last so far for the Flaming Arrows.
