New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office released state school aid totals for the 2013-2014 school year on Tuesday, Jan. 22. According to the state, Sachem will be cut $2 million in aid based on the projected totals.
“We are currently in communication with our local elected officials who are researching this and hopefully they will be able to rectify the problem so that Sachem receives the three to four percent increase that most other districts are receiving,” said Sachem Superintendent James Nolan.
This is not the first time Sachem Schools has been cut in educational aid figures during the state budget process. Most notably, the state cut $16 million from aid during the 2009-2010 school year.
According to Mr. Nolan, he has been in contact with State Sen. Flanagan, State Sen. Zeldin and Assemblyman Graf regarding the fiscal situation.
The state will issue another set of school aid totals in late March, so the district will keep the community informed on the totals when they arrive. Stay tuned to all of Sachem’s platforms for updates on the budget in the coming months.
