Sachem East senior Gabby Trejo, with her mentor and former teammate Brittany Christiansen in attendance, placed sixth in the Millrose Games Trials at the Armory on Wednesday evening with a school record heave of 45’1″ in the 20-pound weight throw.
Christiansen, a sophomore All-Region performer at Slippery Rock University, has been giving pointers to the Sachem East throwers while on winter recess, and Trejo and Brittany Sepe, whose throw of 37’9″ placed her eighth, have both reaped the benefits of the former record holders assistance.
Trejo’s mark becomes the second school record of the season and she will now join Essence Sterling, who set a new record with a 34’4.5″ leap in the triple jump two weeks ago, with a spot on the school record board. Trejo and Sepe are currently ranked fifth and eighth in New York State in the weight throw.
The Millrose Trials also brought out the best in the 4×400 quartet of Jayda Allen, Laurie Semetsis, Shannon O’Hehir, and Ally Figalora as they were the 10th fastest team from Long Island with a time of 4:12.33.
Highlights of last weekends action at the Stanner Games at New York City’s Armory Track and Field Center included the third place finish of the shuttle hurdle relay team of Katie Sullivan, Paige Picascio, Rebecca Carroll, and Shannon Haberkorn. The squad posted a 37.78 and is currently ranked fifth in New York State.
Laurie Semetsis placed sixth in the 600 (1:41.02) and Amanda Zaput placed third in the pole vault with a personal best of 9’4″. Diamond Jackson placed sixth in the shot put (35’1″) with Brittany Sepe just behind at 35’1″, while Ebonie Lewis placed 5th in the 55 with a personal best of 7.51.
Meanwhile at the Jim Howard Memorial Meet at Suffolk West, Sarah LaPorta placed fifth in the 1,500-meter racewalk (7:51.30) while Holly Lindoe of Sachem East and Annica Penn of Westhampton Beach gave the crowd a thrill as they dueled to the top two times in the U.S. this season with Penn prevailing in 6:53.50 to Lindoe’s 6:53.64.
The action packed week also saw Sachem East bring home 23 medals from the League I Relays on Tuesday night. The Sprint Medley Relay team of Meg Murphy, Ally Figalora, Ebonie Lewis, and Casey Gelderman placed 2nd, the 4 x 800 team of Laurie Semetsis, Shannon O’Hehir, Ciara Murphy, and Jayda Allen was second, the 1,500-meter racewalk relay squad of Jenn Campbell and Yvonne Ma placed 3rd, the Shuttle Hurdle Relay squad of Shannon Haberkorn, Paige Picascio, and Katie Sullivan was 1st, and the Long Jump squad of Essence Sterling and Amanda DiSalvo placed second.
Sachem East had particularly strong performances in both the high jump relay and the shot put relay. Maddy Egan and Shelby Trentini teamed to take 1st in the vertical jump while Rachel Miller and Sam May combined to take third. Over at the throws circle Brittany Sepe and Gabby Trejo paired to win the Shot Relay just edging teammates Diamond Jackson and Taylor Kern.
The team has just one meet left, this Saturdays Art Mitchell Invitational, before entering the Championship portion of the season which begins with the League I Championship Meet on Saturday, Jan. 26. The meet will be held at Suffolk West from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.
