Last year Sachem North girls soccer went on an improbable run through the playoffs, upsetting teams and bringing back a familiar glory to the program that was known across Long Island for nearly two decades as a powerhouse prior to the district split in 2004.
It’s starting again this year. Already in the first round of the Suffolk County Class AA playoffs, No. 12 Sachem North upset No. 5 Lindenhurst Saturday in overtime, 1-0, after Courtney Cohen scored the game winner set up by a corner kick from Jessica Mazliah with 3:48 remaining in the extra period.
Sachem goalie Victoria Barclay recorded 10 saves in the shutout victory.
Up next for Sachem (8-5-2) is No. 4 Ward Melville on Wednesday, Oct. 31 on the road at 2:30 p.m.
Sachem East makes first round exit
No. 7 Sachem East (11-3-2) was upset by No. 10 Smithtown West, 1-0, in the first round of the Class AA playoffs. The Arrows finished in second place in League I this season.
