Students from Sachem East and Sachem North attended a Student Leaders Conference and Workshop at Hofstra University on Tuesday.
A total of 20 students attended along with Covey Club advisors from North (Mary Faller & Suzanne Groe) and East (Tina Moon & Laura Leonardi). Sachem East Principal Lou Antonetti also attended with assistant principal Thomas Desmond.
The conference allowed Long Island student leaders, advisors and high school administrators to learn about the importance of leadership training in high schools. The workshops focused on the positive outcomes of leadership training.
Topics discussed included:
- Facilitating Excellent Relations between Students and School Administration
- Increasing School Spirit
- Enhanced Communication Avenues for Safety and School Improvement
- Training Student Leaders to Help Prevent Bullying and help At-risk Students
- Improved Outreach to the Community and Charitable Organizations
- Better Prepared Students for Success in Academics, Life and Business
The conference proved to be a great opportunity for both sides of the district to get together to discuss effective methods for promoting student leadership within each high school. By changing school culture through positive leadership from students, teachers and administrators more students will feel as if they are part of the bigger picture.
Goal setting was also discussed and used as a way to motivate students to become more effective fundraisers and communicators.
“This was a great bridging-the-gap activity for East and North students to collaborate on ways to bring the high schools together on future projects,” said Faller. “The students were excited about working together in the near future.”
