Sachem East head coach Mark Wojciechowski thought his team was ready to take the next step Saturday at William Floyd.
It’s the leap towards being the three-time defending county champions, a perennial Suffolk County Division I power on their home field. Instead, Floyd, who lost its season opening game to Connetquot last week, beat East, 27-14.
Sachem (1-1) opened the game with a 57-yard touchdown burst from Steven Casali and led 6-0. Floyd quarterback A.J. Otranto threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Martinez. An extra point gave Floyd a 7-6 lead.

Otranto scored on a short run in the third quarter and later gave Floyd (1-1) insurance with a 20-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Banks.
Sachem’s other score was a five-yard touchdown run in the third.
“It’s very disappointing,” Wojciechowski said. “We didn’t take advantage of their mistakes, they took advantage of ours. They ran the ball down our throats. We didn’t step up like we could have. We’re not going to quit. We’re going to work hard and get better. We’ll be fine.”
